At one point of my life, I dreamed of joining the circus;
the acrobatics entranced me. Going to see Cirque du Soleil reminded me exactly
why I wanted to be an acrobat artist as a kid. It also reminded me why I for a
short time, I wanted to learn gymnastics and many of the amazing performance
arts that originate from around the world. Today as an adult, I may not be a
world famous star that I so often dreamed, but I still dance for the love of
dancing.
My first introduction to Cirque du Soleil was when I was
fresh out of High School working at the video store. One of the videos that we
would play on the TVs throughout the store was a Cirque du Soleil performance.
It captivated me, the amazing feats the artists completed. I couldn't fully
appreciate it as I had to tend to my duties, and as a consolation, I told
myself that one day I would go to see Cirque du Soleil live. This dream was
finally fulfilled this last Wednesday when I was able to go see Dralion at the
Stockton Arena.
I went to the performance with my husband, who is not the
biggest fan of theater. Oftentimes I will drag him tooth and nail to go to a
show. There are times where I will just leave him at home and go with friends
because it is easier than convincing him it is worth the time and money to go
see. This is one of the events that I wanted to make sure he went with me
because I knew he would enjoy himself. I wasn't wrong, he had a huge grin on
his face throughout the entire show.
When the show starts, you are entertained by a trio of
clowns. The antics of the clowns had us laughing to the point of tears in our
eyes. Their performance was phenomenal. I felt bad for the poor guy they
dragged up on stage. They warmed up the crowed for the other performers who all
came out in a colorful introduction of the different acts that are influenced
by cultures from around the world.
The next hour of performances were extraordinary; you could
tell the artists were dedicated to their craft and loved what they did. Every
so often the clowns would show up to make sure you weren't falling asleep, an
they brought tears of laughter to my eyes every time. There was no chance to
fall asleep because each act was unique and kept you entertained in a different
way. My favorite performance during this time was the trampolines; the artists
made everything look effortless and seemed as if they were flying.
The second act was just as entertaining as the first act;
with more death defying acts. My favorite acrobatic act is the aerial silks,
and the pax de duex performed was beautiful.
Again the clowns entertained me to tears of laughter. The clowns showed
that anyone can dress up in a pretty costume and work with the tools of the
acrobats, but not just anyone can complete the acts with the grace and skill
that the acrobats displayed throughout the night.
This was a magical night, not just for me, but for my
husband as well. We both came away from an amazing experience that we will
remember for years to come. The joy of the performers is infectious, and there
are a few surprises along the way (I don't want to spoil them). To get the full
experience, it is something that you will have to see for yourself as simple
words can not convey the beauty of the show.
